Redshred

Redshred is an AI-powered document intelligence company that transforms unstructured technical documentation into structured, searchable, and actionable content. Using layout geography recognition, content segmentation, and a multi-model machine learning approach, Redshred’s platform converts dense technical manuals, maintenance publications, and technical orders into content that powers downstream applications, including real-time procedural guidance delivered through XR and mobile interfaces. Founded in 2014, Redshred serves enterprise, defense, and government customers (Naval aviation, Air Force, Army, Special Operations Forces, DLA), as well as aerospace/MRO, training and simulation, and industrial/heavy machinery sectors.

Background and Achievements:

Redshred was built to solve a persistent problem across defense and industrial sectors: critical procedural knowledge is locked inside static, unstructured technical and engineering documents that are difficult to search, maintain, and act on. The core platform can rapidly ingest documentation, such as technical orders (TOs), and send the data (e.g. maintenance procedures) to downstream XR applications, such as maintenance training applications via APIs to automatically populate the relevant data rather than copying and pasting it from the pdfs. Further, Redshred’s product, COACH (Cognitive Observant Assistant for Coaching and Helping), was developed under DARPA’s Perceptually-enabled Task Guidance (PTG) program to deliver real-time, step-by-step task guidance through multimodal interfaces, including XR headsets and tablets. Redshred’s work spans multiple government and enterprise industrial use cases.

Challenges to be addressed by XR:

Technicians, maintainers, and operators across defense and industrial environments often work hands-on with complex equipment while needing to reference lengthy, technical instructions  that can span many manuals. Navigating task understanding through multiple manuals  is a process that is slow, error-prone, and pulls attention away from the task itself. XR offers a way to deliver the right procedural step, at the right moment, directly in the user’s field of view, without requiring them to stop and search through manuals.

But XR guidance is only as good as the content behind it: most organizations have thousands of legacy technical documents that were never authored with XR in mind, and manually converting them into structured, XR-ready guidance does not scale. Redshred addresses this upstream bottleneck, automatically transforming unstructured documentation into the structured content that XR-based task guidance systems require.

Why XR is a strategic area:

XR is a critical delivery mechanism for the kind of contextual, hands-free procedural guidance that Redshred’s underlying document intelligence enables. Without high-quality structured content, XR guidance tools are limited by what can be manually authored, creating a significant bottleneck in environments with thousands of technical publications. Redshred’s strategic position is to serve as the content pipeline that makes XR-based task guidance scalable and sustainable, ensuring that as XR adoption grows across defense and industrial sectors, the underlying documentation can keep pace.
