Advances in High Performance, Low Latency Simultaneous 3D Mapping, Localization and Tracking Technologies
To submit a proposal for this research, please follow the guidance provided below
Background
Simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking are foundational to AR experience quality. Yet the field is evolving fast. New algorithms, hardware sensors, and software libraries are emerging from academic research and commercial development at a pace that is hard for practitioners to follow.
Enterprise AR deployments depend on accurate, reliable, and resilient tracking. When the underlying technology is poorly understood or wrongly selected, projects fail, investments are wasted, and teams lose confidence in AR as a viable tool. The gap between what research now offers and what practitioners know about it is real and growing.
There are currently no published, vendor-neutral industry benchmarks for 3D localization accuracy, reliability, and resilience under enterprise conditions. Without them, buyers cannot compare solutions on equal terms, and providers cannot align their roadmaps to what the market actually needs.
This project will close that gap.
Customer problem
The AREA recognizes two distinct groups who face this problem directly.
Enterprise decision makers need to choose hardware and software for internal AR projects and deployments. Today they lack access to neutral, up-to-date information about which simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking technologies perform best — and under what conditions. Without it, they cannot make informed choices about where to invest limited resources.
Providers of AR software and services need current, accurate information to have productive conversations with technology partners, to prioritize feature development, and to build a roadmap for leveraging the latest advances. The absence of shared benchmarks and a common evaluation language makes those conversations harder than they need to be.
This research will address:
- The difficulty of tracking recent advancements in simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking technologies emerging from academic and commercial research.
- The shortage of detailed, neutral knowledge that prevents both customers and technology providers from making informed decisions.
- The absence of published industry requirements for device interoperability, and documentation of accuracy, reliability, and resilience — which means opportunities to apply these technologies in AR projects may be overlooked or never developed.
- The risk that investments in 3D mapping hardware or software become rapidly obsolete, or prove unsuitable for target use cases or environments.
Project Goals
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the current state of the art in simultaneous high performance, low latency 3D mapping, localization and tracking for enterprise AR.
- Identify hardware and software providers that measure and publicly document 3D localization accuracy, reliability, and resilience under enterprise conditions — and distinguish those leading on benchmarked performance.
- Analyze research findings to identify key trends, top categories of opportunity, and categories of risk.
- Compile sample content and open-source libraries, with instructions for their use, so AREA members can test and evaluate emerging algorithms themselves.
- Develop a decision support tool that helps members assess whether and where advanced simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking technologies are suitable for their existing or planned AR projects.
- Provide AREA members with the foundation to lead the market in defining benchmarks and performance documentation standards.
Deliverables
- A comprehensive research report describing the current state of the art and future trends in clearly defined categories and segments of the AR pipeline and ecosystem. The report will cover the latest research publications and academic centers, emerging companies, and major technology providers — with explicit attention to which providers are publishing performance benchmarks and leading on accuracy, reliability and resilience.
- Sample content and open libraries with instructions for their use, enabling AREA members to measure, benchmark and evaluate emerging algorithms — including open-source options and any required hardware guidance.
- A decision support tool for members to identify the most suitable simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking technologies for their specific enterprise AR use cases and environments.
- An executive summary of key findings, prepared for public release.
- An AREA members-only webinar presenting findings and enabling direct engagement with the research team.
Selection Criteria
All proposals will be evaluated by the AREA Research Committee chairs and research manager on the following criteria:
- Clear qualifications of the proposing research organization in the domains of simultaneous 3D mapping, localization and tracking, computer vision, SLAM, sensor fusion, and enterprise AR deployment.
- Demonstrated experience conducting applied research for enterprise technology audiences, with examples of prior reports, publications or implementation projects.
- A realistic, well-structured project plan with clear milestones, timeline, and resource allocation across all four phases.
- Evidence of the ability to identify, compile and document open-source and commercial algorithm samples in a form accessible to enterprise practitioners.
- Quality of references and prior client feedback, particularly from enterprise or industry association engagements.
