XR Support in Safety-Critical Environments
The AREA Welcomes AtkinsRéalis as a Member
BOSTON, MA – OCTOBER 7, 2026 – The Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance (AREA) today announced that global engineering services and nuclear company, AtkinsRéalis, has joined the consortium as a member. AtkinsRéalis has joined the AREA to collaborate with global industry leaders, technology providers, research institutions and enterprise adopters advancing the use of extended reality (XR) across industrial and critical infrastructure environments.
Through its growing XR capability portfolio, AtkinsRéalis is exploring how immersive technologies can improve client needs for safety, productivity, workforce capability and knowledge transfer across the full asset lifecycle, from design and construction through operations, maintenance and decommissioning. In safety-critical environments such as nuclear, this includes using XR for remote expert support, voice-guided procedures, immersive training and digital twin integration, helping to reduce time on task and time spent on site.
As organizations increasingly adopt digital twins, artificial intelligence and immersive technologies into operations, XR is emerging as a key enabler for delivering trusted information, guidance and insights to frontline workers at the point of need. As a result, there are significant opportunities for XR to enhance workforce training, remote expert support, work execution, asset intelligence and digital assurance across safety-critical sectors including defense, energy, nuclear, transportation and infrastructure.

“Extended reality technologies are maturing beyond experimentation and becoming practical tools for improving how nuclear assets are designed, delivered, operated and decommissioned,” said Marvin Johnson, Head of Extended Reality, AtkinsRéalis. “By joining the AREA, we look forward to collaborating with a global community of industry leaders to adopt best practice, accelerate mutual innovation and explore the growing role of XR in nuclear.”
“AtkinsRéalis is a recognized leader in engineering, nuclear, and infrastructure services, making them a valuable addition to the AREA,” said Mark Sage, Executive Director of the AREA. “Their commitment to exploring XR technologies for workforce training, operational excellence, and knowledge transfer reflects the growing demand for immersive solutions in safety-critical industries. We are excited to collaborate with AtkinsRéalis and our global membership to advance the adoption of practical, scalable XR solutions that deliver measurable business value.”
