Overview of event
The AR for Enterprise Alliance (AREA) is the only global membership-funded alliance helping to accelerate the adoption of Enterprise Augmented Reality (AR) by supporting the growth of a comprehensive ecosystem. Through its Interoperability and Standards program, the AREA seeks to build industry knowledge about the benefits and approaches to achieving interoperability and to advance the development of standards or other approaches to interoperability.
Point clouds are sets of data arranged in space when objects or volumes are scanned in 3 dimensions using technologies such as LiDAR, depth cameras, photogrammetry and systems based on Structure for Motion (SfM) algorithms. Industrial and enterprise Augmented Reality professionals are increasingly using tools that produce, analyze, segment, store or ingest point clouds to extract features for tracking and generate machine-readable real world maps or models of the real world. One of the challenges with point clouds is their size.
The international standard body for media compression, also known as the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), is currently developing the ISO/IEC 23090 standard series on the coded representation of immersive media content (also known as Point Cloud Compression). When implemented in tools and services, the MPEG PCC standards will reduce the cost and increase the interoperability of point cloud-based tools and services.
This AREA Interoperability and Standards webinar will provide attendees:
- Reasons point cloud compression standards are/will be valuable when deploying AR with real world maps in the workplace,
- MPEG PCC Working Group origins and goals,
- Structure and current status of the new standard,
- Tools and guidelines for testing and implementing MPEG PCC, and;
- Suggestions for contributing to further development of this standard.
