AREA Research Committee Webinar – 3D Capture and AR for Subsurface Utility Engineering
On-site planning and excavation of underground infrastructure requires easy access to reliable and accurate subsurface utility records to ensure an informed decision-making foundation. In this webinar, new methods using Reality Capture and AR technology will be presented to provide informed visualization for utility owners and contractors when planning, managing and supporting subsurface utility engineering projects on and off site. The method was implemented in an outdoor AR prototype system capable of accurate and robust in-situ visualization of 3D capture data with close alignment to the real surroundings. Another AR visualization method was also developed, however, this time using conventional utility map data as visualization source. The method focused on visualizing the utility data as virtual utility markings providing close and seamless blending with the ground surface as well as adapting real utility marking design schemes from industry guidelines.

AREA Research Committee Webinar – Distributed Mobile AR Architectures in the Lab and Beyond
Dr. Maria Gorlatova’s lab in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Duke University is conducting research on adaptive intelligent behaviour in Internet of Things systems and applications. This includes architectures, algorithms, and protocols for emerging pervasive systems. These are applied to domains such as enabling networking of objects that harvest energy from the environment, monitoring different elements of human activities and Augmented Reality.
Specifically, the lab is developing and testing factors that affect response time and quality of service when distributed AR architectures leverage the computational resources on the edge of networks.

AREA Research Committee Webinar – European Union ARtwin Project
In order to validate the benefits of an AR Cloud dedicated to industry and construction 4.0, the European Commission has granted members of the AR-Twin consortium support to develop a system capable of continuously maintaining a Digital Twin or BIM model that is as close as possible to the physical factory or the construction site. Such a system could then be the basis for deploying services such as AR device localization, quality control and real time resource management. To deliver services to diverse AR devices and address complex use cases, the data processing, mapping or rendering will be distributed and utilize 5G technologies.
AREA Interoperability and Standards Webinar Introduction to IEEE ARLEM
Currently, custom engineering is required to integrate AR-enabled training solutions with existing learning management systems. Without a standard, enterprises must repeat the integration with each source of learning content. IEEE ARLEM defines an overarching conceptual model that describes interactions between the physical world, the user, and digital information, the context for AR-assisted learning and other parameters of the environment. AREA Research Committee Webinar Estimating Enterprise AR ROI using AREA’s On line Calculator
The AREA Research Committee worked with Strategy Analytics, a Boston-based IT market research firm, to develop a best practices report and an ROI calculator specifically for enterprise AR. When delivered to AREA members, the ROI calculator was an Excel spreadsheet. In May, the AREA introduced the Web-based enterprise AR ROI calculator. Dr. Rafael Radkowski directs the augmented reality and computer vision efforts in his lab at the Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University. He and his team study various computer vision techniques for tracking and scene understanding as well as how these techniques add benefit to AR-supported tasks such as assembly training and manual inspection.
