Overview of event

On-site planning and excavation of underground infrastructure requires easy access to reliable and accurate subsurface utility records to ensure an informed decision-making foundation. In this webinar, new methods using Reality Capture and AR technology will be presented to provide informed visualization for utility owners and contractors when planning, managing and supporting subsurface utility engineering projects on and off site. The method was implemented in an outdoor AR prototype system capable of accurate and robust in-situ visualization of 3D capture data with close alignment to the real surroundings. Another AR visualization method was also developed, however, this time using conventional utility map data as visualization source. The method focused on visualizing the utility data as virtual utility markings providing close and seamless blending with the ground surface as well as adapting real utility marking design schemes from industry guidelines.

Agenda

During this webinar, Lasse H. Hansen from Aalborg University, together with Rasmus from IT34 A/S, will present the development and use of new 3D capture and AR methods for capturing and visualization of utility data. Attendees will get insights about:

  • How easy-to-use 3D capturing of as-built utilities during open excavation has been the new default surveying method for forward-thinking utility owners in Denmark,
  • How 3D capture data can be used as a visualization source in AR to provide a real looking-beneath-the-surface experience to help on site decision-making,
  • How conventional map utility data can be displayed as realistic-looking utility markings to provide comprehensible visualizations for utility workers

Host: Christine Perey, PEREY Research & Consulting

Speakers: Lasse H. Hansen, PhD, Aalborg University; Rasmus L. Johansen, Project Manager, IT34 A/S
