The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre helps companies win work across the nuclear sector – in new build, operations and decommissioning – and in other quality-critical industries. Its facilities and services are open to all.

The centre’s engineers and sector specialists work with companies to develop innovative techniques and optimised processes for large-scale high-precision manufacturing. Companies can use the Nuclear AMRC’s state-of-the-art workshops to develop and test new processes on production-scale machines without losing capacity in their own factories. The Nuclear AMRC also provides a range of supply chain development support to help manufacturers enter the nuclear market and compete worldwide. The Fit For Nuclear programme is a unique diagnostic tool which lets companies measure their operations against industry requirements and close any gaps.

The Nuclear AMRC is backed by industry leaders and government, and owned by the University of Sheffield. As well as its core research factory on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire, the centre operates a modularisation R&D facility at Birchwood Park, and Nuclear AMRC Midlands in Derby to develop new technology areas.

It is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a national alliance of seven leading manufacturing research centres.

Background And Achievements:

The Nuclear AMRC was established in 2009 as part of the UK government’s low-carbon industrial strategy, and opened its core research factory in South Yorkshire in 2012.The centre has since developed and consolidated its position at the heart of the UK’s civil nuclear manufacturing industry, and opened additional R&D facilities in the North West and Midlands to expand its capabilities into other technology areas of vital importance to the UK nuclear industry.

The Nuclear AMRC has worked with thousands of companies, including many SMEs, to help them expand their capabilities and win work in nuclear and other innovative low-carbon sectors.As well as manufacturing innovation, the centre has launched an extensive supply chain development programme to help companies meet the quality and safety requirements of the industry’s top tier, including the flagship Fit For Nuclear programme. As of 2023, participating companies have reported that the Nuclear AMRC’s support has helped them to win more than £3 billion of new contracts.
