DOCOMO Open Development Kit for Wearable Devices

NTT DOCOMO introduced its Device Connect WebAPI, an open-source API to enable smartphone apps and web contents to control various wearable devices for healthcare and other solutions, as well as to collect data from these devices. The Device Connect WebAPI supports publishing and retrieving data to and from devices from different manufacturers.

For example, a developer could link a wristband device of one manufacturer to operate another manufacturer’s smart glasses, and likewise retrieve data collected from a pedometer and a bodyweight scale, and then integrate the data for display with a single application or web browser. Browser-based device control and data collection are enabled by DOCOMO’s proprietary server-virtualization technologies running on smartphones. The Device Connect WebAPI utilizes technology that is proposed for standardization as a Generic Open Terminal API of the Open Mobile Alliance, the industry forum that is driving mobile-service standardization. Also, DOCOMO is collaborating with leading smart-glasses developers Seiko Epson, Vuzix, and WESTUNITIS to develop and verify highly enhanced functions for these devices. Edinburgh Airport to Trial Google Glass Technology

They’re probably something more likely worn by James Bond or seen in a Star Trek film but, in the first of its kind in Scotland, Edinburgh Airport is acting as guinea pig to trial Google Glass.

Google Glass is a type of wearable technology with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD). It works by displaying digital information in a hands-free format, similar to what you would find on a smartphone.

Those wearing a pair of Google glasses are able to communicate via the internet using voice commands and take pictures just by winking.

Until the end of the year, the airport’s customer welcome team, Blackjack (a division of Omniserv limited), will be using the state-of-the-art eyewear to improve the passenger experience by providing up-to-date flight information, foreign language translations and answer general inquiries about the airport and City.

The cutting edge technology was introduced at Heathrow earlier this year, and Edinburgh Airport’s welcome team are currently testing the system in the check-in hall to establish the best way to assist passengers.

From general questions about airport facilities to translating passenger documentation into English, Google Glass has never been used in an airport environment before and is something which the team at Edinburgh are excited about.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to improve the airport experience for our passengers and Google Glass trial is a great example of how we’re thinking out the box.

“The fact that it’s the first trial of its kind in a Scottish airport is exciting as it shows we’re leading the way in how we interact with our passengers. Over the next few months we’ll be able to establish whether this product is suitable for an airport environment.”

Part of a wider partnership between the airport, OmniServ, a subsidiary of Air Serv & ABM, this Google Glass trial will result in a quicker and more detailed level of customer service.

Airbus Looking at Virtual Reality Helmets for Stressed Passengers

Airbus is building on its windowless virtual reality cockpit concept with its patent application for a VR helmet designed to let passengers swap the discomfort of flying for a more calming virtual experience. The key to the Airbus system described in the patent is a VR helmet installed in or on the passenger seat. When folded away, the helmet and its carrier form part of the headrest. In operation, the helmet folds over the passenger’s head along with a sliding visor.

Rockwell Collins Augmented Reality Orientation System

BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia (Sept. 23, 2014) – Rockwell Collins today unveiled the Rockwell Collins Augmented Reality Orientation System, an industry leading situational awareness capability for the dismounted soldier. The new system is on display at the Land Forces 2014 trade show in Brisbane, Australia.

The Augmented Reality Orientation System fuses an augmented display solution with military data links in real time to provide a full 360-degree situational awareness capability to modern warfighters. Coupled with a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera, situational awareness information is fused with a day or night view and displayed as a digital image to provide operators with a tactical edge.

The system, developed by Rockwell Collins in Australia with research assistance from the Engineering and Human Interface Technology Laboratory of the University of Tasmania, Australia, has been designed to operate “out of the box” with Australian Defence Force (ADF) in-service situational awareness and targeting systems including the Patrol Persistent Surveillance System and FireStorm™ Digital Joint Fires Targeting System.

Enhanced Learning Through Use of Virtual, Augmented Reality and Simulation

SYKESVILLE, Md. & TEESSIDE, United Kingdom–(BUSINESS WIRE): Global energy services solutions provider GSE Systems, Inc.
