XMReality provides mobile Augmented Reality solutions for remote guidance, primarily for industrial users who need to solve technical issues on the spot with the help of a remote expert. XMReality’s remote guidance works on both tablet computer and smart glasses, and enables collaboration when and where it is needed.
For example, a person can, from a remote location, guide another person through field work using the mobile AR software. An expert at a workstation can guide a user using hand gestures, holding up a tool to demonstrate a procedure or by using graphic pointers to indicate a position of interest.
Background and Achievements
XMReality was founded in 2007 by researchers from FOI (the Swedish Defense Research Agency). Since the company´s inception it has carried out advanced contract research in the fields of Mixed and Augmented Reality on behalf of the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) and BAE Systems. XMReality has also participated in medical research programs in collaboration with, among others, the Centre for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) at Linköping University. The company started its commercialization phase in 2012 and the customer base has increased rapidly.
XMReality was short listed in 2013 as one of the most innovative Swedish companies.
The company offers a plug-and-play solution for enterprise Augmented Reality. XMReality has designed a video see-through head-mounted display and develops software which, together, provide an optimal user experience for field workers. XMReality also ports its software to run on third-party hardware, including smart glasses.
Challenges to Be Addressed by AR
Many organizations have strong use cases for AR. With Augmented Reality integrated into workflows, people can achieve their goals more quickly and cost effectively. We at XMReality believe that most field workers could be far more efficient than they are today.
Today many tasks done by those in the field are slow and expensive. A minor service visit to an urgent technical problem can take hours or days to be resolved. XMReality Remote Guidance now makes remote use cases available in countries hard to access due to war or inaccessible by other means.
With AR-assisted Remote Guidance, it is as if an expert were standing right at the point of need at the right time. By having the support of the remote expert who can see from the point of view of the field worker, companies can catch and resolve issues much earlier than with only a phone call or a few images. Customers using our software for remote guidance can annotate the local user’s view, capture redline procedures and do inspections.
Implementing Remote Guidance reduces down time and travel-related costs.
Why AR is a Strategic Area
We feel that in the long run and when well implemented, AR can increase the operational lifetime of any complex machinery or equipment and make the best use of limited human as well as financial resources.
In addition to increasing efficiency at large scale we also believe that Remote Guidance is an important way to decrease training time through on-the-job competency sharing. Technology providers like XMReality are at the forefront of a new way of working that will completely transform many operations.
We fully agree with Gartner’s assessment:
In the next three to five years, the industry that is likely to experience the greatest benefit from smart glasses is field service, potentially increasing profits by $1 billion annually. The greatest savings in field service will come from diagnosing and fixing problems more quickly and without needing to bring additional experts to remote sites.
